A native of Miami Florida, virtuoso saxophonist Luis Hernandez began his musical career at the age of 14. He studied at the prestigious music program at the University of North Texas where he played in the internationally acclaimed "One O'clock Lab Band for three and a half years. He also completed graduate studies at Rowan University. In 1996, Luis joined the U.S. Navy Band "Commodores" (no, not with Lionel Ritchie!) as tenor saxophonist and featured soloist, where he served for 26 years! Luis has performed and/or recorded with Arturo Sandoval, Dave Samuels, Gerry Mulligan, Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker, Maria Schneider, Terri Gibbs, Vanessa Ruben, Eddie Daniels, James Moody, Chris Potter, Afro Bop Alliance, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Arturo O’Farrill, Chuchito Valdez, James Taylor, Baby Face, Jerry Bergonzi, Poncho Sanchez, Mary Wilson, Luis Perdomo, Paquito D’Rivera, the Philadelphia Orchestra and many others. A member of the dynamic Latin Jazz group Afro Bop Alliance, Luis won a Latin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz recording for their recording with the Caribbean Jazz Project. He currently serves as professor of Jazz Saxophone at the Shenandoah Conservatory
